AURA - the winning concept of the students of Gdansk University of Technology

Alicja Jackowska and Ewa Bombalicka - students of the Faculty of Architecture at the Gdansk University of Technology - have created the winning design for the Polish Sailing Museum in Wladyslawowo. The competition for the architectural and urban planning concept for a branch of the National Maritime Museum in Gdansk was organized by the Gdansk University of Technology, the National Maritime Museum in Gdansk and the Society of Friends of the National Maritime Museum. "AURA" was appreciated for its interesting and iconic solid shape and very interesting management of exhibition spaces connected to the water front.

concept on an urban scale

The settlement of the internal student competition took place in February 2024, as we reported on our portal: Results of the competition for the design of the Museum of Polish Sailing. The winning concept was based on analysis of the site under development along with its surroundings. The goal of the project was to create a unique building with an open form, encouraging users to visit it. An important aspect was to ensure easy access and a clear communication layout. Functional, natural, landscape and communication analyses carried out at the initial design stage formed the foundation of a comprehensive architectural concept for the area under development.

The main entrance to the museum was placed in the corner of the building, facing Bohaterów Kaszubskich Street and the planned access road with a parking lot for visitors. The building was designed on a modified L-plan, which made it possible to create a courtyard with green areas, recreational spaces and a playground, offering a view of the bay. The organic shapes of the area relate to the dynamic wave form of the building.

It was decided to create and emphasize a viewing axis between the exposed entrance corner of the museum and the designed pier of the marina,creating an attractive viewing relationship between the two.

concept on an architectural scale

The designed premise was inspired by the changing aura inherent in sailing and its challenges. The lump of the building, topped by a dynamic wave, harmoniously transitions into the organic forms of the area, encouraging the enjoyment of the surrounding attractions.

An important visual element of the project was the chosen material solutions, such as the use of transparent and milky glass in the facades, creating an effect of misty mystery. The combination of these two materials adds lightness to the mass by visually "lifting" the glazed, set-back first floor. The milky glass, while not revealing the building's interior, allows for a fragmented connection between the exposure and the view of the bay through a translucent glass element.

The project includes accessibility for people with disabilities. Toilets adapted to their needs are provided on each floor. Wide corridors facilitate communication, and paved access routes to the building are more than 1.5 meters wide. Elevator access from the first floor allows free movement on all floors. The designed entrance doors meet access requirements for people with disabilities, and all interior doors are at least 90 centimeters wide.

main design assumptions

The main design assumptions include the location of the exhibition area and restaurant overlooking the Puck Bay. A space with greenery, a playground and recreational areas is planned in the heir in front of the museum. A clear, legible entrance for visitors provides easy access to the facility. The functional grouping of the staff area, connected by a separate horizontal and vertical communication, enables efficient operation. Water is introduced here as a development element, harmoniously harmonizing with the internal display of yachts. The restaurant will have independent communication access, allowing guests to enjoy dining services without visiting the exhibition. The flexible arrangement of the exhibition area will allow its layout to be freely transformed according to needs.

Water was introduced into the development in the form of a two-level fountain with a waterfall. The organic form of the square refers directly to the shape of the building, creating a coherent whole with it. The use of a buried fountain with a waterfall and a glazed wall on floor -1 allows for the creation of an interesting viewing relationship between the exposed yachts and the water, with which they are inextricably linked. This detail is hidden at first glance from the perspective of a person entering the museum, allowing to heighten the impression with the element of surprise during the visit.

The functional-utility assumptions include different zones depending on the floor of the building. The first floor provides the main entrance zone, with a spacious lobby, ticket offices, checkroom, security and store. There is also an educational zone, provided for the organization of lectures and workshops, as well as an employee entrance zone, associated with administration and social facilities. Also located on the first floor is a guest room zone, providing private bathrooms and a shared kitchen for researchers and guests, as well as aworkshop zone, allowing for specialized technological arrangements with the necessary apparatus.

On the -1 floor, the main exhibition zone is planned, an open space, allowing the arrangement to be adapted to the needs of the exhibition. A storage and technical zone has also been planned, containing storage and technical rooms, such as connection rooms, fan rooms and a heat substation. An exhibition zone connected to the main exhibition zone by a system of ramps and mezzanines, overlooking the main exhibition and the bay, has been placed on the +1 floor. A conference zone has also been provided, connected to a storage area, which allows for convenient storage of the mobile elements of the arrangement, making the conference room more multifunctional. A restaurant area designed for more than 100 people, with access for both museum visitors and outsiders, is located on the +2 floor. The functional restaurant facilities have separate communication and a freight elevator.

pro-environmental elements

The project uses heat pumps as the main power source. They convert energy from one medium to another to regulate temperature, being a greener solution using renewable energy sources. In addition, extensive green roofs, characterized by a thin layer of substrate and hardy vegetation, act as thermal insulation, maintaining a constant temperature in the building. Thanks to water retention, green roofs delay rainwater runoff, and the vegetation on them contributes to improving air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. In addition, the facility is equipped with rain gardens in the form of retentive gravel depressions with plants to help purify the flowing water.
