13 years of preparation. Construction of concert hall in Warsaw begins

07 of April '23

The design of Sinfonia Varsovia was selected in an international competition in 2010. In 2021, Atelier Thomas Pucher officially completed the design work. Two years after the documentation was handed over and 13 years after winning the competition, the first construction work is starting. There is still a long way to go before the concert hall itself is built.

The investment is to be carried out until 2026. The current stage will mainly involve the reconstruction of the historic buildings of the former Veterinary Institute on Grochowska Street. The work is expected to take two years. The start of the investment is possible thanks to the Warsaw City Council's decision to allocate funds, which will allow the continuation of work that is an important element of the Integrated Revitalization Program. The voted changes to the Long-Term Financial Forecast of Warsaw 2023-2050 included shifting funds from the second stage of the investment to the first.

On March 5, at the headquarters of Sinfonia Varsovia, during a press conference attended by President Rafał Trzaskowski, an agreement was signed with the general contractor for the first part of the Sinfonia Varsovia Centrum investment. DORACO Construction Corporation was selected through a tender process as the contractor for the works.

We are happy that after years of intensive preparations and many uncertainties we can finally begin construction. This is long-awaited news for all of us, musicians, office staff and me personally. In two years, we will find ourselves as an institution in a completely new and exciting situation. At the end of 2025, we will be able to inaugurate a year-round artistic season for the first time in the orchestra's 40-year history.

In the first stage, three historic, more than 120-year-old buildings will be adapted by 2025 : the palace and two pavilions of the former Veterinary Institute on the side of Grochowska Street. They will house educational spaces and two small concert halls for intimate performances and educational classes. These spaces will serve the orchestra's musicians for practice and rehearsals until the entire project is completed. A café, restaurant and music bookstore, among others, will also be built here.

The work undertaken in this phase will also include, among other things, preliminary landscaping of the area for the planned garden and laying the foundations of the openwork frame surrounding the entire park.

Subsequent stages will include the construction of a complex of four concert halls, with the largest to accommodate more than 1,850 seats. The buildings will also include recording studios, rooms for music education classes, rooms for the artist residency program, bars, cafes and an extensive garden. The entire investment is expected to cost 660 million zlotys.
